GearHead's 12 Step Program Part 4: FUZZ

Regular "GearTrappers" know that I'm a fuzz hound. I love fuzz because it's the most over the top member of the gain boost family. We touched on how a distortion will clip you signal going into the front of the amp and also how OD will give you a smooth, warmth, but fuzz is different still. Fuzz basically kicks your signal in the ass and sends it packing- out the door and through the amp! Some classic fuzzes include: The Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (now made by Dunlop), The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, and the legendary Ampeg Scrambler. These models have cultivated reputations as fuzz icons over the years. Some newer fuzzes that I think have just as good a chance of attaining icon status are: Blackout Effectors' Fix'd Fuzz, Mad Professor's Fire Red Fuzz, and the Demeter Fuzzulator. These are all great units which prove to be as unique in tone as their OD/distortion counterparts. Thanks to everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Trent Reznor, we've been enjoying the gnarliness of fuzz for decades and it's evolved just like the music it's defined. With any luck, we'll be enjoying fuzz for years to come.
